The Golden Temple’s history dates back to 1574, when Akbar, the Mughal emperor, gave the land to the third Guru Amar Das’ daughter when she wed Jetha, who would eventually become the fourth Guru, Guru Ram Das. Guru Ram Das began work on a fresh water tank in 1577. The temple’s foundation was supervised by Guru Arjun Dev, the fifth guru and the son of Guru Ram Das, in 1588. After five years, he finished the building and compile the Adi Granth. Guru Har Govind laid the cornerstone for the Akal Takht, the seat of spiritual power, in 1606. Bhai Mani Singh was chosen to serve as the temple’s curator in 1699.
